Episode 29: How To Respond When Your Kid’s "Outta Control"

In this episode, I speak to a criticism/clarification made by a podcast listener re: how to respond to a kiddo in full blown “outta control” meltdown mode. I talk about being firm and assertive and how that looks in REAL life if you have a child prone to explosive behavior in an unregulated state and when to effectively use empathy.

Topics covered:

  • My response to a podcast listener’s criticism

  • Empathy and when it’s effective

  • Pack Leadership and Assertiveness

  • Strong willed kids and what actually helps them calm down when they’re in full blown meltdown mode

  • Creating a safe space for the child to calm down and why any attempt to try and talk them out of their feelings is futile when you’re in the heat of the moment

Episode 28: 3 Reasons Why Your Convos are Unproductive

In this episode, I talk about why conversations are often unproductive and how to change that. We often think we’re having a conversation but it’s really just a lecture in disguise. A conversation that is centered around a parent’s agenda to “teach” a lesson is really a lecture. I think you’ll find this episode enlightening to say the least...it may even slightly piss you off. Love ya!

Topics covered:

  • How do I get my child to do ____? This is a sure sign of control and always leads to an unproductive lecture

  • You’re in The Parent Gap and thinking that if only your child would learn the things you want to teach them then they’d behave better and life would be smooth sailing

  • “You do you.” Why are you so triggered? Why are you attempting to control your child? What are you missing? What’s your child’s perspective? Did you really dig in and begin the conversation by seeing their perspective and putting your agenda aside?

  • You didn’t actively listen. You jumped into problem solving and missed this crucial stepl

  • Recap: The 3 reasons your convos are unproductive:

  1. Control and a hidden agenda

  2. Lecturing instead of active listening

  3. You’re in The Parent Gap

Episode 27: Moms, Girls, Body Image Stuff - A REAL Convo with Dana Suchow

In this episode, I spoke with speaker and educator, Dana Suchow about female body image issues, eating disorders, diet culture and how to productively talk about this sensitive topic with our girls. We got down and dirty and had a rich convo. I think you’re going to find it super interesting and possibly take a pause to think about some of the “elephant in the room” topics we dug deep into. Needless to say, I thought we had a riveting conversation. Enjoy!

Topics covered:

  • Diet culture

  • Eating disorders

  • Food restriction and how it activates the scarcity signal in our “lizard”/primal brain

  • Gender binary (I didn’t know what this was until this interview)

  • Body awareness

  • Self awareness

  • Social media and what part it plays in our girl’s body image issues and suggestions for how to handle it

  • Moms and daughters and how moms accidentally exacerbate the situation when we see our girls struggling with something similar to what we’ve gone through

  • Modeling the behavior you want for your daughter when it comes to a healthy relationship with food

  • The role of the media in affecting our female body image basis

Dana Suchow - Speaker and Educator

Since overcoming Bulimia, Binge Eating Disorder and exercise compulsion that resulted in permanent injuries, Dana Suchow has become an expert in the field of body image and eating disorder prevention. Offering a nonclinical and holistic approach, Dana will teach you how to put your child on a path towards body love, empowerment and self-acceptance.

Episode 26: Real Coaching With Randi on 3 Strong Willed Kid Scenarios

In this episode, I include the Q&A portion of a masterclass I recently taught that I think many of you will relate to (especially those of you with a strong willed one).

Topics covered:

  • A strong willed and sensitive kid that ignores consequences and refuses to change his behavior or see the other kid’s perspective.
  • An oppositional defiant teenage boy who ignores the house rules and is taking part in risky teenage behavior.
  • The “gifted” child who’s a stellar athlete and an A student - how to help “that” child strive for excellence and be their best.

Episode 24: Real Coaching with Randi

In this episode with podcast listener and SAHM, Heather, we dive into the secret worry most of us can relate to..."Am I screwing this up – are my kids going to struggle because I don’t know what the hell I’m doing?!?"

Heather is a perfect example of an awesome mama that doubts herself and her abilities as a mom. She is a former early childhood teacher as well as a mom that reads parenting books, listens to podcasts and has even taken a parenting class. However, she still often feels at a loss about what to do when her kids are misbehaving.

As you’ll hear, it’s all about mastering her mind to dissolve the limiting belief that “she is not a natural leader”. I think many of you’ll relate to Heather’s honesty and will gain a lot from this coaching session. Enjoy!

Topics covered:

  • Negative spouses and negative kids

  • Fix it mode and control

  • Exhaustion after a long day with littles and feeling responsible as a mom for things not going smoothly...and the need to defend our kids as “normal” to their own dad

  • Bedtime battles

  • When the kids only want Mommy and Daddy gets his feelings hurt

  • The bedtime window 7:30-8:30 and the 2nd wind when you miss it

  • Sensitive nervous system kids

  • Pack Leadership energy

  • Why pack leadership/assertive communication doesn’t come naturally for most women

  • Backtalk and disrespect

  • Why we usually handle these negative behaviors all wrong and make it mean something that it doesn’t

  • Leaning into the suckage when you’re disrupting a pattern

  • Sleep training

  • Role playing the productive convo establishing the new bedtime routine with Heather’s four year old

Episode 22: Real Coaching With Randi

In this episode with podcast listeners, Julia and Brooke, I cover many topics that I think many of you will relate.

To apply to be coached on the podcast

Topics covered:

  • Strong willed 8 year old with a sensitive nervous system who is super affected by lack of sleep and sugar

  • Younger brother with easier temperament looks up to his older brother and mom worries that he is learning problematic behavior from big brother

  • Dr. Bruce Lipton and Epigenetics

  • Subconscious programming during the first 7 years of life and living in a Theta brainwave state

  • Why mind mastery is the way to reprogram our adult brain

  • Why strong willed kids propel us to learn how to reprogram our brains and become our biggest gifts

  • Easy kids don’t present enough of a challenge for us to take the time to learn something new...wouldn’t it be more fun to binge watch Orange is the New Black rather than listening to parenting podcasts?!?

  • It’s human to enjoy our easiest kids more and this has nothing to do with how much we love each of your children

  • Sibling rivalry and why it often does have to do with jealousy because the strong willed ones know that we enjoy easier sibling more

  • How our dynamic from growing up shows up as triggers when we see our kids display that same dynamic

  • Mediation tool, my conflict resolution tool, to handle sibling rivalry…”victim first”

  • The #1 mistake is going to the aggressor first. Ex: “Stop hurting your brother”

  • What you focus on grows

  • Focus on the healing not the hurting by going to the “victim” first rather than the aggressor

  • Strong willed 3 year old

  • Less is more and quality over quantity...why Brooke nailed it by saying no to doing all the “best mom ever” stuff on the weekends

  • Highly sensitive people and Elaine Aron’s work

  • Anxiety and learning to see it as your superpower

Episode 21: Top 3 Tips for Managing Fortnite & Other Video Game Obsessions

In this episode, I recorded a FB Live in response to a podcast listener’s request for help with her teen son’s Fortnite addiction. There are 3 simple steps I cover in terms of navigating the boundaries around video game balance. This is realistic guidance for those of us who allow our kids to play video games and want to supervise and manage the situation without it becoming a constant power struggle. We are looking for video game balance. This is not a relevant episode for parents that have a screen free household…and for the record, hats off to ya! I’m secretly jealous and missed the boat on being able to pull that one off. Plus, if I’m really being honest, I've used technology as a sanity saving babysitter with my kids over the years. Just keepin’ it real people!

Topics covered:

  • 3 tips:

1. Adopt a set of rules and communicate at a non/relevant time using Pack Leadership language and assertiveness.

2. Expect to remind and repeat often.

3. Follow through consistently without matching your child's upset attitude.

  • Laying the foundation with a productive convo
  • Addiction and how video game addiction compares to smoking or HEROIN!
  • Strong willed kiddos and why these tips work with all kids.
  • Productive convos are logical and respectful and therefore you’re kids are receptive.

Episode 20: Allowance, Chores and How to talk to our kids about money - A REAL Convo with Colin Ryan

In this episode, I have a conversation with author and speaker, Colin Ryan. Colin travels around the country speaking to college students about money. Can you believe they actually have a good time while learning about money?!? I picked Colin’s brain about his views and suggestions re: the pressure we face as parents in terms of raising kids that will go out to responsibly earn in the world. Colin really has his finger on the pulse of productively speaking to young people about money and setting them up for success. His book is called A Comedic Guide to Money.

Guest Bio:

Colin Ryan is a one-of-a-kind comedic speaker, a financial educator and author with the background of a professional comedian and storyteller. His work is to bring hope and humor to an area of life where everybody needs to feel more comfortable yet nobody thinks it's okay to talk about. As a speaker, in the hour he spends with students and adults he gives them the tools to reinvent their money relationship. How to save up, borrow safely, and spend in line with who you are - these things influence what's possible for you. Because your ability to manage your money directly affects your ability to reach your dream.

Topics covered:

  • When to start talking to your kids about $$$

  • Allowance

  • Entitlement

  • Instilling a hard work ethic

  • Why and how we usually handle the topic of money unproductively with our kids

  • Colin’s approach to take with kids

  • How fear and a scarcity mindset around money will sabotage your kid’s creativity and ability to find work they love
