Episode 36: Insights From My Dog Walk

In this episode, I recorded my thoughts on a recent dog walk where I had a sort of “brick to the head” AHA. I compared walking my dog to many of the parenting tools I’ve been teaching for over a decade.

Topics covered:

  • Positive reinforcement

  • Making a child’s behavior mean something it doesn’t

  • Seeing the situation from your child (or dog’s) point of view

  • Parenting is: establishing rules, expecting to repeat those rules often, and following through consistently over and over

Episode 35: How to Have Productive Convos About Sex with Anya Manes

In this episode, I sat down with Parent Coach and host of the annual Talking To Kids About Sex Interview Series. We had an informative conversation where we shared lots of personal stories. I think you’ll find it extremely helpful as you navigate these sometimes challenging convos around sex with your kiddos.

Topics covered:

  • Rape culture vs. consent culture

  • Porn and technology

  • What age you begin the birds and the bees convos

  • Open communication with your kids

  • Preventing your child from becoming the playground “sex-splainer”

  • Leaning into this difficult conversation and more!

Anya Manes is an educator and parent coach, specializing in helping parents talk with their kids about sex and relationships.  As a high-school teacher for over a decade, she became intimately aware of teen struggles and how our current sex-ed programs and parenting culture fail to give kids the skills they need to navigate adolescence safely.  Anya hosts the annual Talking To Kids About Sex Interview Series and speaks publicly at schools, parent groups, conferences, and private events. Anya coaches parents, privately and in groups, helping them build skills around feeling and defending boundaries, articulating sexual values, answering children’s questions, and becoming critical thinkers about sex in the media.

Episode 33: The Sibling Fighting Tool

In this episode, I share a Facebook Live I did in my private Mastermind Parenting Basics group where I role play how to resolve a sibling fight for a mom of 2 girls, ages 4 and 7. I’ve never taught my sibling fighting tool publicly before and I think you’ll find this episode particularly helpful. It’s honestly, the best way to resolve sibling squabbles while also teaching your kids high level conflict resolution skills that they’ll use out in the real world. It’s really good stuff if I do say so myself!

Topics covered:

  • Sibling fights

  • Empathy

  • Calming down

  • The Calm Down Corner

  • Conflict Resolution

  • Assertiveness training

  • Seeing your strong willed child’s perspective and conveying it productively

In this short episode, I talk about a recent convo with my husband and brother in-law about an adult that kept “failing" in business and seemed to have an excuse or reason why each situation was not his fault. I share my thoughts on what we can do as parents to help our kids not become THAT guy.

  • Blame

  • Failure

  • Perfection

  • Vulnerability

  • Taking personal responsibility and learning from mistakes

Episode 29: How To Respond When Your Kid’s "Outta Control"

In this episode, I speak to a criticism/clarification made by a podcast listener re: how to respond to a kiddo in full blown “outta control” meltdown mode. I talk about being firm and assertive and how that looks in REAL life if you have a child prone to explosive behavior in an unregulated state and when to effectively use empathy.

Topics covered:

  • My response to a podcast listener’s criticism

  • Empathy and when it’s effective

  • Pack Leadership and Assertiveness

  • Strong willed kids and what actually helps them calm down when they’re in full blown meltdown mode

  • Creating a safe space for the child to calm down and why any attempt to try and talk them out of their feelings is futile when you’re in the heat of the moment

Episode 28: 3 Reasons Why Your Convos are Unproductive

In this episode, I talk about why conversations are often unproductive and how to change that. We often think we’re having a conversation but it’s really just a lecture in disguise. A conversation that is centered around a parent’s agenda to “teach” a lesson is really a lecture. I think you’ll find this episode enlightening to say the least...it may even slightly piss you off. Love ya!

Topics covered:

  • How do I get my child to do ____? This is a sure sign of control and always leads to an unproductive lecture

  • You’re in The Parent Gap and thinking that if only your child would learn the things you want to teach them then they’d behave better and life would be smooth sailing

  • “You do you.” Why are you so triggered? Why are you attempting to control your child? What are you missing? What’s your child’s perspective? Did you really dig in and begin the conversation by seeing their perspective and putting your agenda aside?

  • You didn’t actively listen. You jumped into problem solving and missed this crucial stepl

  • Recap: The 3 reasons your convos are unproductive:

  1. Control and a hidden agenda

  2. Lecturing instead of active listening

  3. You’re in The Parent Gap
